This is a space to explore Jewish inflected popular culture. I specialize in televisual Jewishness but will also include analysis of Jewish infused popular culture such as, film, music and theatre. I am especially interested in the major differences between Jewish expression in contemporary TV comedy and dramas. Why, for example, do Seinfeld, The Larry Sanders Show and Curb Your Enthursiasm rely so much on stereotypes and elements of the closet whereas dramas like Brothers and Sisters does not?
November 20th, 2009 marks the 80th anniversary of the debut of The Goldbergs on U.S. radio. Berg was an auteur, pitchwoman, advisor, Tony award winning actor, yet, there seems to be little interest in her and her landmark series. She put an openly Jewish family on radio in a time of virulent anti-Jewishness. Molly Goldberg was such a comforting and inspiring voice in the Depression era, one wonders what words of solace she would offer in this time of economic crisis.
